Today, India is home to the world’s largest number of modern-day slaves, estimated at between 13.3 and 14.7 million, according to the first index of global slavery compiled by the Perth-based Walk Free Foundation. India is among 10 nations that together account for the highest numbers of enslaved people—a massive 76% of the worldwide total of 29.8 million people estimated to be in slavery.

The first edition of Global Slavery Index ranks 162 countries, based on three factors: estimated prevalence of modern slavery by population, a measure of child marriage, and a measure of humans trafficked in and out of a country.
